The Landscape Ecology Research Section of Environment and Climate Change Canada (LERS) is located at the National Wildlife Research Centre on the campus of Carleton University in Ottawa. We do research to support biodiversity conservation initiatives. For example, the Pathway to Canada Target 1 is a national initiative designed to coordinate efforts to conserve 17% of Canada's terrestrial and inland water areas by 2020. In support of this effort, LERS scientists are investigating indicators of protected area connectivity, and implementing selected indicators in an open source R package. Boreal caribou are threatened under the federal Species at Risk Act, and anthropogenic and natural disturbances continue degrade habitat. LERS researchers are participating in a major collaborative effort to model boreal forest dynamics and wildlife responses using SpaDES, an open source modelling platform (https://spades.predictiveecolgoy.org/)). We are leading development of a resource road network project module and some wildlife response modules. Development of open source packages and model components helps ensure that our research is findable, accessible, interoperable and reuseable.
