Duties

As the Manager of the Acoustical Radiation Physical Sciences Division (ARPSD) within the Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau (CCRPB), you will establish priorities in acoustics relevant to health protection; identify strategic goals/objectives; undertake planning exercises and lead a small team.

As both a Manager and Subject Matter Expert in the field of acoustical (infrasound, sound and ultrasound) radiation, you will provide expert scientific, technical, policy and regulatory advice; including: recommendations and interpretation of policies, guidelines and standards to management, manufacturers, industry, government and non-government agencies and the general public.

You will represent the Department as an expert at national and /or international conferences, symposium, seminars and/or workshops.

The Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau (CCRPB) is in the Environmental and Radiation Health Sciences Directorate of the Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch of Health Canada. CCRPB helps to protect the health of Canadians from exposures to ionizing, non-ionizing and acoustical radiation from radiation emitting products. We are located at 775 Brookfield Road in Ottawa, Ontario (Riverside/Heron), in a unique building with specialized laboratories (including a large anechoic chamber).

With convenient access to parking, buses and the O-train, the building is also within walking distance to Vincent Massey Park, Hog’s Back Falls and Mooney’s Bay. Nearby amenities also include: a gym, a Tim Hortons, a cafeteria, a convenience store, and restaurant.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this poster is to fill one (1) indeterminate position.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level within Health Canada.

EDUCATION:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position such as engineering.

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience applying principles of noise protection and risk assessment to support the management of acoustical (infrasound, sound or ultrasound) radiation risks.

• Experience leading a scientific, technical or research initiative in the area of acoustical (infrasound, sound or ultrasound) radiation.

• Experience preparing and providing scientific, technical or regulatory advice, pertaining to acoustical measurements and assessments, to one or more of the following: senior management*, industry, stakeholders, governments or the public.

*Senior management is defined as Director level or above.

KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge of physics or engineering theories, or principles as applied to: the design, use, and performance of acoustical radiation emitting devices; or, environmental acoustical sources.
• Knowledge of health hazards of acoustical radiation.
• Knowledge of key national and international standards applicable to the assessment and management of risks from acoustical radiation emitting devices.

ASSET EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Masters or Doctoral degree from a recognized university in science or applied science with specialization in physics, engineering, or other relevant science related discipline.

• Degree from a recognized university with a specialisation in acoustics.

Degree equivalency

• Experience in participating in federal, provincial or territorial environmental assessment processes pertaining to noise exposure.

• Experience in managing financial resources.

• Experience in coordinating laboratory or field measurement activities supporting a regulatory or scientific program.

ASSET KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge of the purpose and scope of application of the Radiation Emitting Devices Act (REDA) as it applies to or implicates acoustical (infrasound, sound or ultrasound) sources.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally.
