Duties

To sow, maintain and harvest plants grown in controlled environment conditions.
To maintain and collect plant pathogen isolates and conduct plant pathology test.
To conduct crossing of plants as necessary.
To collect and prepare plant material for genetic, biochemical or chemical analysis.
To generate laboratory data.
To perform data analyses of laboratory data sets to validate hypotheses.
To interpret research data, write reports and present research results at workshops and scientific meetings.
To interpret research data and present in the format of scientific manuscripts for publication in recognized peer-reviewed journals.
To write and defend a Master or Doctor of Philosophy thesis; wherin the report of the work carried out during the project is reported.

Work environment

Work Environment: molecular biology and plant pathology lab, greenhouse and growth chambers and experimental field.

Education:
Currently accepted or willing and qualified to enroll in a MSc or PhD program in the Colleges of Arts and Science or Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in basic plant biology.
Experience in growing and maintaining plants.
Experience in laboratory work relating to plant or microbial.
Experience in genomics and/or bioinformatics.
Experience in analysing and understanding research data.
Experience in conducting literature reviews and summarizing information.
Experience in writing research reports and making scientific presentations.

*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Work with hazardous laboratory chemicals, plant and plant pathogens.
To work outdoor to evaluate field plot experiments and conduct pathology tests.Ability and willingness to work outside of normal working hours (e.g. evenings and weekends).
Ability and willingness to work under minimal supervision.
Ability and willingness to work in greenhouse or field under rain, heat, cold, windy, dusty or noisy conditions.
Under appropriate safely precautions, ability and willingness to work with hazardous material.
Ability and willingness to do repetitive tasks.
Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
