Duties

Aquatic Science Biologist positions within DFO are diverse in terms of their duties and skill sets required, as they contribute to the full range of DFO's core research areas. In general terms, a Level II Aquatic Science Biologist is required to: conduct field or laboratory activities; use quantitative models to analyze and interpret data; and contribute to the preparation of technical reports and scientific publications to advance the scientific understanding of Canada's aquatic ecosystems and resources.

Work environment

We are located in Mont-Joli, at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, on the shores of the St-Lawrence Estuary. It is an exceptional work environment, where you can achieve your professional ambitions while meeting people who are passionate about their field.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience conducting scientific work in the field of biological sciences.
Experience in conducting quantitative analyzes and interpreting data using statistical or analytical tools or techniques.
Experience contributing to the writing of reports or scientific publications.

EDUCATION
Post-graduate degree from a recognized university in natural, physical or applied sciences with a specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience conducting scientific work in one or more of the following fields:
a. population dynamics
b. fish or invertebrate stock assessments
c. habitat sciences
d. fisheries science
e. ecosystem science
f. biodiversity science or conservation biology
g. genomics
h. benthic ecology
i. oceanography
j. taxonomy
Experience in population and / or ecosystem dynamics modelling.
Experience in spatio-temporal modelling.
Experience in multivariate statistical analysis of biological, ecological or oceanographic data.
Experience using the following software: Matlab, R and / or SAS.
Experience in the use or management of scientific databases or in query programming for the purpose of storage, analysis and access to scientific data.
Experience in developing procedures for transforming or loading complex data using languages such as SQL, PL / SQL, Python, R and MATLAB.
Experience using Ocean Data View software or other graphic design software.
Experience in geomatics (e.g.: ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial analysis or geostatistics.
Experience in conducting scientific work at sea on small boats or medium or large vessels.
Experience in data analysis and / or the use of passive or active underwater acoustic devices.
Experience in underwater imaging, image analysis and processing.
Experience in the use of technologies dedicated to the characterization of the seabed such as multibeam sonar, sonar, LIDAR or the interpretation of the data generated by these technologies.
Scientific diving experience.
Experience with captivity, transport, handling or care in captivity, in the laboratory or in the field, with living aquatic organisms.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
For some positions:
Accept and be able to travel to remote regions or outside of Canada.
Accept and be able to participate in sampling work in the field, on wharves, on ships or small boats.
Accept and be able to work at sea for a period of up to 6 consecutive weeks or totalling up to 12 weeks per year.
Accept and be able to operate small boats and hold a small vessel operator qualification certificate issued by Transport Canada or agree to follow and successfully complete theoretical and practical training to obtain this certificate.
Agree to complete and pass the WHMIS certificate.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

For some positions:
Hold a valid driver's licence.
Hold a medical fitness certificate in accordance with Health Canada certification.
Be willing and able to work flexible hours and work overtime.
Valid certificate of scuba diving.
