Duties

The student will conduct research on the microbial activities driving nutrient fluxes in agricultural systems, from on-farm trials to adjacent shallow aquatic systems, including drainage ditches, and wetlands. The research will involve: 1) establishing landscape-level sampling designs; 2) taking soil, sediment, and water samples at regular intervals from the experimental sites; 3) analysing microbial communities and functions using molecular approaches (DNA/RNA extraction, quantitative/RT PCR, sequencing); and 4) statistically analysing the interactive effects of environment x microbiome on nutrient retention or release into the Great Lakes basin.

Work environment

The Harrow (Ontario) Research and Development Center is one of 20 Research Centres under Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network. The facilities include a modern lab/office complex to house more than 100 full-time staff and two research farms for field studies. Harrow RDC is a lead contributor in research on the quality and sustainable use of Ontario soils as methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses from agricultural soils. This research enhances the environmental health of agro-ecosystems (on- and off-farm) in the Great Lakes basin.
