Duties

As Chief Librarian, you will be responsible for managing and delivering library, research, lending and information services to Canadian Space Agency (CSA) employees and external clients, including libraries in federal and provincial departments, public, academic and private organizations, industry partners and the general public.

You will be called upon, among tasks, to:

Manage the activities of a specialized and dynamic customer service team.

Deliver innovative services related to bibliometrics, research, information monitoring and other services.

Make innovative recommendations and coordinate operational and technological improvements to the library by monitoring trends in federal and/or scientific libraries.

Develop and analyze evaluation tools, services and products offered and take the necessary measures to meet client needs.

Promote the library's expertise and services to internal and external clients and develop promotional materials. Focus on the political context surrounding the CSA to add value to library services.

Partner with colleagues and professionals from other government departments, academia, industry and the private sector to share leading-edge knowledge in the areas of library and information science.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff 1 permanent position. A pool of qualified candidates will be established and could be used to staff similar positions whose length, linguistic profiles and security profiles may vary.

EDUCATION:
• Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a master's degree in library science or in library and information science or in information science;
OR
• Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a bachelor’s degree in library science or in library and information science or in information science for which another bachelor’s degree was a prerequisite.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
• Recent* and extensive** experience in providing library services and responding to client enquiries;
• Recent* experience in developing or promoting quality library services that meet the needs of clients;
• Experience in supervising subordinate employees, including the following: assigning tasks, setting priorities, reviewing work performed and evaluating performance.

*Recent: This experience can normally be demonstrated by working in the field within the last three (3) to five (5) years;
**Extensive experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be acquired by a person in a position where the performance of these duties are/were the main function over a period of at least two (2) years.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in providing information research and information monitoring services.
• Experience in the use of bibliometrics as a tool for evaluating performance measures in science.
• Experience in the management and delivery of library services in a scientific library.
• Experience in acquiring and maintaining electronic products and services such as databases and electronic bibliographic resources.
