Assessment accommodation

All testing and interviews will take place in Parry Sound, Prescott or Sarnia. Candidates from outside the Federal Public Service will be required to pay for their own travel expenses.

Duties

Installs and performs preventative and corrective maintenance and removal of the following: Lanterns and power systems on fixed and floating aids to navigation, generators, pumps and hydraulic power units.

Provides reports of activities to supervisor.

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

STREAM 1 – Mechanical - Parry Sound (ON), Prescott (ON)
STREAM 2 – Electrical - Amherstburg (ON), Parry Sound (ON), Prescott (ON)

The intent of this process is to staff two (2) positions on a full-time, indeterminate basis in Parry Sound, ON [Technician – Mechanical] and two (2) positions on a full-time, indeterminate basis in Prescott, ON [Technician – Mechanical]. The needs for Electrical Technician positions are currently anticipatory.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established from this process and may be used to staff similar positions with different tenures (i.e. on a term, acting or an indeterminate basis) in the Canadian Coast Guard.

EDUCATION
Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
Red Seal Electrical certificate.
Fall Protection and Rescue certification.
Marine Emergency Duties (MED) – A3.
Restricted Radio Operator’s License.
Valid Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificates.
Valid first aid certificate.
Forklift Operator Certification.

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in field or remote site operations.
Experience in the installation and/or maintenance of aids to navigation equipment and systems.
Experience in working with helicopters.
Experience with working at heights
Experience working in a marine environment and basic seamanship
Experience using software for Life Cycle Management.
STREAM 2 – Electrical
Experience in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems (such as diesel generators).

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
STREAM 1 – Mechanical
Possession of valid Provincial Journeyman Certification in one of the following trades:
Heavy Duty Equipment technician, Diesel Mechanic, Millwright, Automotive Mechanic
or 4th Class Marine Engineer or higher.
STREAM 2 – Electrical
A valid Ontario Electrical License.

EXPERIENCE:
BOTH STREAMS
Experience in the use of MS office software (such as Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer).
Experience working with little or no supervision.
STREAM 1 – Mechanical
Experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems and equipment with internal combustion (Diesel- driven gensets, pumps, hydraulic power units etc.)
STREAM 2 – Electrical
Experience in the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
Experience with photovoltaic power systems.

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of Canada Labour Code Part II.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures related to a workshop environment and the field.
Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of hand and power tools normally found in a repair facility.

ABILITIES and SKILLS:
BOTH STREAMS
Ability to effectively communicate orally.
Ability to effectively communicate in writing.
Ability to operate a computer using MS office software (such as Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer).
STREAM 1 – Mechanical
Ability to diagnose and provide effective repairs to diesel/gasoline equipment.
STREAM 2 – Electrical

Conditions of employment

Valid Health Canada Medical
Possession of a valid divers licence - Class G in Ontario – Driving a light truck or similar automobile is required.
Climb towers and work at heights in excess of 2.4m.
Travel for extended periods of time to remote sites via trucks, boats and aircraft.
Work weekends/overtime and travel on short notice.
Access remote sites over rugged terrain and work outdoors in extremes of environmental conditions.
