Reporting directly to a Team Lead (senior counselor or above) in the Legal Services Branch, legal counsels offer legal advice and analysis to staff, senior management as well as to members of the Commission. Legal counsels also ensure that each step within a CRTC proceeding is undertaken in manner that conforms with legal principles of natural justice.
The Canadian radio-television and telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is an administrative tribunal operating at arm’s length from the federal government. The CRTC endeavours to ensure that Canadians have access to a world-class communication system that promotes innovation and enriches their lives. Its role is to apply the legislation under its regulatory mandate, in particular the Broadcasting Act, the Telecommunications Act and Canada’s Anti-spam Legislation; as well as to enact regulations, regulatory policies, decisions and other regulatory mechanisms in order to properly fulfill its mandate to regulate and supervise broadcasting and telecommunications in the public interest.
The legal directorate of the CRTC offers a dynamic and intellectually stimulating working environment. We also foster flexible working conditions that allow our lawyers to better reconcile their professional and personal lives. Based on the most recent Public Service Employee Survey Results https://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pses-saff/2019/results-resultats/bq-pq/31/index-eng.aspx, the CRTC placed 6th in terms of the best places to work in the federal public service. The specific result of the legal services branch are particularly notable in that:
• 92% of our employees like their job.
• 92% of our employees are proud of the work that they do.
• 96% of our employees would recommend the CRTC as a great place to work.
The CRTC Legal Services Branch is looking for a legal counsel to fill one (1) position on a term basis. The term would begin in April/July 2020 and would end in April/July 2021. The exact dates will be established with the successful candidate. While the position being filed is for a one-year term, there is a possibility of the term being extended or that the position will be made indeterminate.
A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates may be established in order to fill similar positions within the Legal Services Branch with varying tenures and language requirements, which may vary according to the position to be staffed.
Priority consideration will be given to persons who currently occupy an LP-01 position within the federal public service.
