Intent of the process

The intent for this anticipatory process is to establish a pool of qualified candidates for EG-03 and EG-04 Field Technologist positions in Ocean and Ecosystems Science Division, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region. These anticipatory positions will be staffed in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on a temporary or permanent basis.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION

All Positions:
One of the following:
• Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution program in a natural or applied science, mechanical design, ocean technology, oceanography, or other marine related field logistics; or
• An acceptable combination of education (minimum of secondary school graduation), training, or apprenticeship, in combination with work-related experience, related to marine related field programs. This may include military training programs or formal work-related training programs, certifications, or designations, and/or applied work-related marine technical field experience, as examples.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

All Positions:
• Minimum 2-years of work experience applying principles and strategies to solve marine-related field technologist problems;
• Experience working under the direction of project leaders on the preparation or mobilization/demobilization of marine-related field projects, such as (but not limited to) ocean science research programs or offshore petroleum activities, as two examples;
• Experience using computer-based software (e.g., email, spreadsheets, word processing, and presentations) in support of work-related tasks and communications;
• Experience working in marine-related field settings, such as on offshore vessels/platforms, coastal vessels/platforms, and/or in proximity of water (e.g., wharves, jetties, etc.).

Additional Requirements for EG-04:
• Minimum 5-years of work experience as a project leader, or directly supporting a project leader, on the preparation and mobilization/demobilization of marine-related field projects, such as (but not limited to) ocean science research programs or offshore petroleum activities, as two examples;
• Experience leading marine-related field program logistics, in a team setting, including the communication of program logistics to management and other team members.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE

All Positions:
• Experience preparing and maintaining marine winches and/or other marine hydraulic equipment;
• Experience with calibration standardization of oceanographic instrumentation and/or experience preparing, deploying, and/or recovering oceanographic equipment (e.g., sampling instruments or moorings);
• Experience using geographic information systems (GIS), Matlab, R-data analysis software, and/or mooring design/mooring analysis software.

• Knowledge of mechanical and electronic devices (e.g., winches, etc.) and/or field instrumentation (e.g., environmental sampling devices, etc.) used in the marine environment and/or approaches, techniques, and/or platforms used to study the marine environment
• Knowledge of project management approaches and strategies

ABILITIES

All Positions:
• Ability to plan, organize, and establish priorities

• Willingness and ability to work flexible hours and overtime
• Work at sea on research vessels for up to 4 weeks per year as required
