Under the direction of a research scientist, designs, develops, implements, and analyzes new or improved methods to assess the risk, hazards, and impacts of new or existing forest insects, diseases, or abiotic factors. Designs, develops, implements, and analyzes new or improved methods to detect, survey, monitor and assess forest insect and disease populations. Analyzes data and prepares written or oral technical or scientific reports; ensures adherence to quality control methods and procedures of existing forest health methodologies. Provides advice to, and consults with, internal and external clients on methodologies to assess the risk, hazards, and impacts of new or existing insects, diseases, or abiotic factors that affect forest health.

Intent of the process

A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological science

Note:
1. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience in conducting field research on insects, or vegetation

Experience in the use and application of experimental design or survey methods for biological studies under field conditions

Experience in publication of scientific reports and oral presentation of such material as demonstrated by published reports

Knowledge of entomology and insect ecology

Knowledge of health and safety requirements in a laboratory and field environment

Ability to conduct statistical analysis of biological data

Ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as in teams

Ability to effectively communicate orally in English and make presentations to targeted audiences.
