Science’s Population Ecology Division (Salmon Section) is looking for an Aquatic Science Technician to support various activities within the Bay of Fundy Salmon Assessment Unit. A key responsibility of this position is to operate the fish passage facilities located at New Brunswick Power’s Mactaquac Generating Station and, as such, act as a liaison between New Brunswick Power and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
We are seeking a qualified person to fill one (1) permanent Aquatic Science Technician position.
A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures within Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation with a high school diploma from a recognize secondary institution
EXPERIENCE
- Experience working in freshwater environments, including working with freshwater or diadromous fish species (examples include capturing, handling, collecting measurements or samples, tagging)
- Experience conducting Salmon assessment field work in freshwater environments (examples include: fishway operations, working with rotary screw traps, electrofishing, snorkel surveys, working with seine nets)
- Experience with data entry and analysis and preparing summary reports using applicable computer software programs such as MS Excel and MS Word
- Experience giving presentations to technical and non-technical groups
- Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups such as industry stakeholders, indigenous organisations, academics, environmental organisations
EDUCATION
- Graduation with a diploma or a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural, physical, or applied science or engineering relevant to the duties of the position
ASSET CERTIFICATIONS
- Electrofishing
- Standard First Aid and CPR
- Swift Water Rescue training
- Wilderness and Remote First Aid
- Completion of Canadian Boating Safety Training Course and possession of Pleasure Craft Operator Card and / or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency certification
- WHMIS and/or other Occupational Health and Safety certifications
- SCUBA certification
- Overhead Crane (Hoist)
- New Brunswick Air brake endorsement and/or Class 3 Driver’s Licence (or equivalient)
EXPERIENCE
- Experience working in a fish culture environment (examples include: monitoring and control of environmental factors, biosecurity, operation of complex rearing environments, monitoring aquatic animal health)

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Willing and able to seasonally work overtime, weekends, holidays, and variable hours

- Willing and able to work in remote field locations in and around rivers and lakes, sometimes under harsh conditions such as inclement weather

- Willing and able to operate 4x4 trucks in a variety of on and off road conditions, including towing trailers of a variety of sizes and configurations
- Willing and able to attain and maintain occupational health and safety certifications to meet Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Canada Labour Code occupational health and safety standards
- Willing and able to become trained in appropriate safety or technical procedures commensurate with the position (for example electrofishing, first aid, swift water rescue, small boat safety).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Medical fitness for electrofishing and Scientific Field work in accordance with certification by Health Canada
- Valid Driver's Licence (New Brunswick Class 5 or equivalent)
- Work weekends, overtime and variable hours for continuous durations up to 10 weeks, including “shift” schedules, as required to meet operational needs
- Work in and around open, moving water
- Participate in periods of strenuous physical work*, associated with field activities and equipment maintenance
- Valid passport with no restrictions on travel and be willing and able to travel to the United States
*Strenuous physical work is considered occasionally pushing or pulling objects up to 75kg and regularly carrying, lifting, pushing, or pulling weights up to 25kg.
