**Note: A supplement of two thousand dollars ($2,000) per year for the performance of grain inspection duties shall be added to the pay of incumbents of positions at levels PI-1-CGC through PI-6-CGC located in Vancouver and Prince Rupert.**

Duties

Working in a three shift, 24-hour work environment at grain terminals located in the Port of Vancouver, Grain Inspection Assistants will be responsible for the collection and preparation of grain samples for the purpose of official inspection. This involves monitoring and drawing a representative sample from the automatic sampling devices followed by the use of mechanical dividers to mix and reduce samples to specified amounts. In addition to other duties, the Grain Inspection Assistant will perform moisture, protein assessments through electronic means as well dockage assessments through mechanical and manual processes.

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is a federal department responsible to ensure the integrity and market ability of grain for the domestic and international grain trade, from producer to global customer.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff (10) ten 2-year term positions in Vancouver, B.C.

A pool may be created to staff similar positions with various tenures.

If invited, candidates will be required to attend, AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, a technical / behavioral competency assessment (excluding employees of the Federal Public Service).

The successful candidates must reside or relocate to the location of the position upon appointment.

A candidate may only write the assessments once as their test results will be valid for a period of 180 days and will be retained for similar processes at different locations.

Experience:
- Experience working in the grain industry.
- Experience in the operation of grain elevators and their sampling and/or bulk weighing systems.
- Experience with grading grain.
- Recent* experience working at the Canadian Grain Commission.
- Significant** experience with the use of standard business related computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet and database).

Recent* and significant** experience is defined as experience acquired daily over a period of 2 years or more within the last 4 years.

- Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain, in good standing, the appropriate security level clearance for access to any work related site.
- Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Ability and willingness to work in a three-shift environment on a rotating basis.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime, FREQUENTLY as required.
- Ability and willingness to travel, FREQUENTLY as required, including on short notice.
- Ability and willingness to work in and around moving equipment in an indoor/outdoor industrial environment.
