Duties

Position Duties
- Contributes to the development of the annual Salmon Enhancement Program Marking plan
- Plans and manages the implementation of the annual automated tagging trailer marking program
- Collaborates with the Watershed Enhancement Managers to ensure hatchery site requirements are met, including infrastructure and staffing requirements.
- Supervises a tagging assistant and manual fish marking staff in tagging trailer
- Leads the preventative and ongoing maintenance program to the automated tagging trailer
- Maintains ongoing data sets, records and reports data to managers
- Manages assigned financial, material and human resources
- Provides technical support and expertise in the operation and maintenance of the equipment related to the automated marking trailer

Intent of the process

The Salmon Enhancement Program is seeking to hire excellent candidates for the role of Automated Tagging Trailer Operator. The position works independently to operate an automated/manual mass marking and coded wire tagging mobile wet lab in the province of British Columbia at the Salmon Enhancement Program major hatcheries. Education:
A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives:
- A satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma

Degree equivalency

Experience:
- Experience in the collection and management of scientific data
- Experience operating and maintaining complex mechanical equipment
- Experience in the use of computer software to operate and maintain equipment
- Experience providing technical support for scientific field or laboratory projects in one of the following areas: fish population science, salmonid enhancement, fish stock assessment, fish habitat science, aquaculture science & production

Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with an acceptable specialization in biology, environmental science, engineering or other related field applicable to the position.

A diploma from a recognized technical institution in aquaculture, fisheries management or related field

Degree equivalency

Experience:
- Experience in fish culture or field activities related to salmon assessment or fisheries management
- Experience with project management, planning, and organization, to bring about the successful completion of specific goals and objectives
- Experience with procurement and purchasing procedures related to contracting and standing offers
- Experience in organizing and planning coded wire tagging of juvenile salmonids
- Experience in fin clipping and coded wire tagging juvenile salmonids by hand
- Experience in directing technical staff
- Experience in salmonid enhancement, aquaculture, or other activities involving handling and transporting juvenile salmonids
- Experience in managing a budget
- Experience operating an Autofish marking trailer
- Experience in supervision as a project leader

- Must be willing to travel to remote locations on Vancouver Island, including overnight stays for several weeks at a time
- This position will require working weekends and overtime
- Valid Class 5 driver's license

- Willing and able to complete First Aid Training
- Willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions
