The Northern Forestry Centre, Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, in collaboration with the University of Alberta, is looking for 2 graduate students under the RAP program for a research project on integrated landscape management in Indigenous communities. The successful applicants will be part of a study focused on the application of methodologies to support integrated landscape management in the context of cumulative effects including ecological restoration and the development of sustainable wood-based bioenergy system. The project is aimed at potentially two study areas; one in northern Alberta and one in eastern Alberta.
The selected candidates will develop community-based approaches to integrate traditional knowledge’s in environmental monitoring, advancing methodologies to support cumulative effects assessment and monitoring at regional scales. The student should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals or conferences. Planning data acquisitions, pursuing field campaigns, and conducting survey among indigenous communities are all potential activities that can be included.
All experimental work and analysis will be performed at the University of Alberta with some visits to The Northern Forestry Centre, Canadian Forest Service.
Participation in fieldwork activities may be required for up to one month per year. During fieldwork, the candidate may be exposed to inclement weather, insects, rough terrain and may need to wear cumbersome protective gear. Medical clearance may be required prior to potential field work.
Students will be hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) with the purpose to accomplish research and complete a thesis or dissertation. Duration of the RAP will depend on academic level: Masters Students (1- 2 years). Extensions may be possible.

successful completion of a Bachelors Degree (for a Masters proposal) and have a strong background in geomatics, forestry or other related field with an interest in environmental monitoring AND are currently enrolled or intend to enroll in a graduate program at the Agricultural Life and environmental Sciences Faculty at the University of Alberta.
Experience working in a multidisciplinary team or experience working with indigenous peoples or organizations
English or French
