IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Canadian Coast Guard is hiring Engineers at all levels, including certified entry level positions within the seagoing Fleet.
Stream 1 – Entry Level Engineer Positions (SO-MAO-03 & SO-MAO-04)
Stream 2 – 1st Engineer Positions (SO-MAO-05 & SO-MAO-06)
Stream 3 – Chief Engineer Position (SO-MAO-07)
Entry level Engineers and 1st Engineers:
Supervises the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
Supervises and assists in the training of engineering personnel assigned to the watch.
Leads and/or participates in, damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
Maintains and updates machinery maintenance records, as well as engine room log and oil record books.
Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.
Chief Engineer:
Supervises, plans and directs the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
Supervises and manages engine room personnel, financial resources and materiel.
Provides technical advice and support to vessel client personnel.
Leads and/or participates in, damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
Compiles, recommends and manages refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel;
Manages, directs and participates, if required, in the watch keeping system.
Provides a thorough Change-Over Briefing with the relieving Chief Engineer, including a review of pertinent vessel documents and relevant correspondence;
Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.
The results of the process may also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates and partially qualified candidates that may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures.

Occupational Certification:
Stream 1
- Transport Canada Certificate of Competency, 4th Class Engineer Motor Ship with valid STCW Continued Proficiency Endorsement.
Stream 2
- Transport Canada Certificate of Competency, 3rd Class Engineer Motor Ship with valid STCW Continued Proficiency Endorsement.
Stream 3
- Transport Canada Certificate of Competency, 2nd Class Engineer Motor Ship with valid STCW Continued Proficiency Endorsement.
All Streams:
• Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Proficiency in Advanced Firefighting- STCW
• Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats - STCW
NOTE: ONLY a copy of a Transport Canada Certificate of Competency with valid STCW Continued Proficiency Endorsement must accompany your initial application. Documentation of Operational and/or Working Days and Copies of Testimonials will be assessed at a later date and therefore are not required to be submitted at the time of initial application.
Experience:
Stream 2 – SO-MAO-05 & SO-MAO-06
2. A minimum of 365 sea days (operational days*) as engineer of the watch.
a. Up to 185 days to be from refit/overhauling.
Stream 3 – SO-MAO-07
2. A minimum of 1100 sea days (operational days*) as engineer of the watch.
a. Up to 365 days to be from refit/overhauling.
*Operational Days: vessel must be on program, refit, or maintenance period.

Asset Qualifications :
• Transport Canada Certificate of Competency, 1st Class Engineer Motor Ship with valid STCW Continued Proficiency Endorsement.
• Valid Marine Advanced First Aid Certificate
• Experience refit/dry-docking/Self Maintenance. (Experience defined as 56 days)
• Experience in the use and maintenance of a Safety Management System
• Experience with computer based maintenance system
• Experience with troubleshooting engineering systems

Conditions of Employment :
• Valid Transport Canada Seafarer’s medical - no geographical restrictions
• Valid Canadian Passport;
• Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program – RPP;
• Willingness to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment;
• Must be willing and able to perform overtime work as required, often on short notice;
• Must be willing and able to work shiftwork, rotating hours, and variable hours of work;
• Willingness to go to sea for prolonged periods of time (including Arctic Waters) in adverse weather conditions, and on various classes of vessels; and
• Must be willing and able to travel by air, land, and by sea.
