Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff two indeterminate positions. A pool of qualified candidates may be created and may be used to staff similar positions within various units and locations with the Department of National Defence.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a valid Certificate of Competency, not lower than a Canadian Master Near Coastal, STCW endorsed.

EXPERIENCE:

Recent experience in the work directly related to the Deck Department of Marine Operations, specifically in the field of ship (5000GT or greater) and tug (1000hp or greater) operations including ship handling.

Recent can be defined as within the last 5 years.

Information on language requirements

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of Ship and Tug propulsion systems and their handling characteristics including tug assists.

Knowledge of navigational data and communication procedures related to the Halifax Harbour as per charts and Sailing Directions (ATL 105).

Knowledge of Marine regulations of the Halifax Harbour including CAZ’s (Controlled Access Zone) as stated in Halifax Port Authority’s “Port Practices and Procedures”.

ABILITIES:

Ability to plan, direct and control the pilotage of ships and other vessels including the direction of tug Masters.
Ability to work under pressure.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

CERTIFICATION:

Master Mariners certificate.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience in the techniques associated with Glen class tug propulsion and handling.

Experience as a ship’s pilot involved in use of tugs to move, berth/un-berth or dock/undock ships, barges or other vessels.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Must meet and maintain Health Canada medical suitability requirements for sea going personnel in accordance with the Treasury Board Occupational Health Evaluation Standard.

Must be physically fit to negotiate ship side ladders, gangplanks and other methods of vessel boarding.

Must be able to work for long periods in exposed locations in all weather conditions.
