Duties

PROGRAM 1: INSHORE RESCUE BOAT NORTH

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Respond and provide assistance to mariners in distress, or in need of assistance;
Work in a search and rescue (SAR) station as part of a team of four persons on a 14-day on / 14-day off schedule.

Note: Working as part of Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) comes with serious responsibility, as SAR operations can occur at any time of the day or night, and during all types of weather and sea conditions.

As a Crew Member, you will actively participate to complete diverse tasks, which may include:

Inspection and maintenance of the IRB station and the rescue boat and equipment;
Provide first aid emergency care, boating safety education and demonstrations to the boating public.


PROGRAM 2: ARCTIC COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND EXERCISING TEAM

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Work within a team to provide on-water and in-classroom training to members of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and other search and rescue partners on a 14-day on / 14-day off schedule;
Participate in community engagement sessions, highlighting the Canadian Coast Guard and the programs and services it offers;
Travel to Arctic communities to provide this training and background information on Canadian Coast Guard programs and services.

As a Crew Member, you will actively participate to complete diverse tasks, which may include:

Assisting with the delivery of classroom and on-water training in a number of communities;
Provide boating safety education and demonstrations to the general public.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN:
These programs are operated by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) under the SAR Program, and hires and trains students each summer to become members of an IRB crew and as part of Arctic Community Engagement and Exercising Teams.

Real time experience in SAR operations;
Training by Canadian Coast Guard SAR Program Officers (subject-matter experts).

EMPLOYMENT DURATION:
Full-time during the summer (late-April to early-September 2020) under the condition of successful completion of the mandatory training prior to the operational season. Training will commence in late-April 2020.

Once selected into the program, the candidate may participate in the program for up to two (2) seasons after the successful completion of their studies.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff various Search and Rescue positions within Canadian Coast Guard Arctic Region.

A pool of qualified candidates may be created and could be used to staff these or similar positions with various tenures within the Canadian Coast Guard.

Must be willing and able to work at any assigned station or training location
Must be willing and able to accept on-call duties
Must be willing and able to work overtime
Must be willing and able to accept a time on / time off work schedule
Must be willing and able to work in adverse conditions such as those found in the marine environment
