Duties

This position:

- Oversees the development, management and evaluation of transportation-related research activities and programs;

- Identifies potential financial and operational aspects related to research and development, undertakes a detailed analysis of alternative courses of action and their implications, addresses difficulties and problems in their execution, and devises appropriate action plans and approaches;

- Proactively pursues and cultivates regional, national, and international research and development opportunities that are consistent with Transport Canada’s mission, strategic plan and research goals;

- Provides information about research already available in various transportation policy areas, and supports or leads the development of technical papers, presentations and briefings, as required;

- Hires, supervises and evaluates the performance of research personnel;

- Works with Human Resources to recruit, staff and develop of highly qualified transportation research personnel;

- Coordinates and monitors research activities to ensure alignment with departmental and project goals and objectives;

- Reviews and interprets research studies conducted by ministries, crown corporations and other jurisdictions.

EX3: Experience managing human and financial resources***.

EX4: Experience representing an organization’s interests at meetings or stakeholder consultations.

* Significant is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities, which could normally be acquired over a period of approximately two (2) consecutive years.
** Senior management means Assistant Deputy Minister level or above (or C-Suite Executives).
*** Managing human resources is defined as activities involving assigning tasks, monitoring and evaluating performance, managing a financial responsibility centre (i.e. employees, students, contractors, casuals or working groups).
