Get to know the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC):

The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

CORCAN, as part of the Correctional Service of Canada, is responsible for the Employment and Employability Program for offenders serving a federal sentence. CORCAN support and operates a wide variety of interventions in federal institutions as well as for offenders under community supervision. Construction related positions with CORCAN provide a unique opportunity to conduct duties related to the trade in a correctional environment (institution and community based), providing on the job, vocational and apprenticeship training for offenders who are assigned to CORCAN job sites. The positions are located in federal correctional institutions or community based locations where CORCAN operates vocational training centers or is completing projects. Construction supervisors employed in these areas are responsible to plan, coordinate, implement, monitor and contribute to the completion of projects for clients while directly supervising instructors and supporting employment and employability skills acquisition of offenders assigned to training in these locations. All incumbents must be willing to work on a regular basis within a federal correctional environment (institution and community), including direct interaction and supervision of offenders. Incumbents also have regular contact with other areas of CSC and the government, as well as clients, stakeholder groups and members of the public. EDUCATION

Possession of a valid Provincial or Inter-provincial Journeyman Certificate in a construction trade (carpenter, electrician, plumber or other acceptable) OR acceptable combination of education and experience as it relates to the construction field.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Experience in direct supervision of subcontractors and/or trades carrying out construction projects.
Experience in supervising large construction projects.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of CORCAN employment programs
Knowledge of Building codes and regulations. (Federal)
Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code.

EXPERIENCE

Experience creating construction project schedules.
Experience estimating large multi trade construction projects.
Experience in a correctional setting working with offenders.
Experience in the use of computer systems and software. (For example, AutoCAD, MSProject,…)
Experience in working on construction projects for Indigenous communities or organizations
Experience in participation, maintenance, and compliance with construction site safety programs and occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
Experience in supervising multi unit residential construction projects
Experience in supervising modular or ready to move residential construction projects
