Duties

We are looking for Programmer Analysts to support our Application Development and Maintenance work within the Information Management and Technology Services (IM&TS) branch.

Under the functional supervision of a Team Leader, the incumbent will be involved in the support and maintenance of mission critical systems providing important services to our public and internal clients. The work will include the design, development, testing, support, and maintenance of these systems.

The incumbent will be part of a small team where communication and teamwork are a must and interactions with clients and partners are very frequent. We expect members of the team to be very resourceful, dynamic and self-sufficient, and to become experts in the technologies associated with these mission critical applications.

Key activities include, but are not limited to: Participating in the design and coding of Web applications on Windows platforms; Monitoring system performance and ensuring applications are kept at an optimum level of performance and availability; Participating in updates, new releases and migrations of business applications; Keeping up-to-date with current trends in technology.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff 2 positions. A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established from this selection process and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures, various linguistic profiles as well as various security clearances within Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of two years of an acceptable post-secondary educational program in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed.

Indeterminate period incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standards based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the CS group.

At the manager's discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum post-secondary education stated above. EX1:Recent** Experience as a Programmer, Developing or Maintaining Custom Web Applications.
EX2: Recent** Experience in creating DDL and SQL scripts for relational databases.

Candidates will be required to complete a Practical Exam to assist us in assessing your competencies covering the technical Knowledge areas listed below.

This practical exam is meant to simulate the types of requests and challenges that our unit is presented with as part of normal operations. It will help us assess your knowledge or skillsets.

K1:Good knowledge of web application development.
K2:Good knowledge of relational database management systems, SQL and integration with web applications.
K3:Knowledge of software engineering concepts, methodology, and practice, including Object Oriented analysis and design.
