Work environment

The creation of the Department of Indigenous Services Canada is an important development in our renewed relationship with Indigenous peoples. These structural changes will allow our government to work more effectively with Indigenous partners to provide services that improve people’s day-to-day quality of life. Our work will be based on recognition and respect for the right to self-determination.

In the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) of Indigenous Services Canada, we strive to provide access to quality health services, improve health outcomes, and support greater control of the health system by First Nations and Inuit.

We are searching for collaborative and strategic individuals who enjoy working in a dynamic and energetic environment, with a strong focus on quality client service.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar, term and/or permanent positions, acting, assignments/secondments, or deployments.

Positions may be staffed via the Aboriginal Peoples Employment Program (APEP), which aims to strategically increase Aboriginal representation within First Nations and Inuit Health Branch. As such, Organizational Needs may be applied and first consideration may be given to candidates self-identifying as belonging to Aboriginal peoples.

A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives.

Note:
The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are:
• A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or
• An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Significant experience* working in a health care setting such as clinics, long-term care facilities, community or hospital setting.

Significant experience* in providing efficient advice to health professionals, such as physicians, dietitians or nurses.

Experience in analyzing information and providing recommendations.

*Significant experience is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities which would normally be acquired over a period of approximately two (2) years.

Successful completion of two years training at a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in social science or statistics, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience or Graduation from a two year Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM) in food services and nutrition management.

Degree equivalency

Experience conducting research using print and online research and reference tools.

Experience in working with a claims processing system such as HICPS (Health Information & Claims Processing Services).

Knowledge of health issues prevalent in Indigenous peoples.

Ability to work effectively with First Nations, Inuit or Metis.

Aboriginal Cultural Competency

Willingness and ability to work overtime on short notice.
