Duties

The successful candidate will be required to carry out research and development activities related to numerical modeling of structural steel deformation and failure under high strain rate loading. Tasks will include a literature review of material deformation and failure models and the development and implementation of testing plans to rapidly evaluate the high strain rate response of structural steel alloys.The duties may also include numerical simulation of high strain rate laboratory or field experiments.

Work environment

Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is an agency of the Canadian Department of National Defence that responds to the scientific and technological needs of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Its vision, mission and values guide Defence R&D Canada to ensure that the CAF remains scientifically and operationally relevant. The agency is made up of eight centers located across Canada with a corporate office in Ottawa.

The Atlantic Research Center develops innovative technologies and systems in the fields of naval platforms, underwater warfare. Work will be conducted within the Dockyard Laboratory Atlantic Section (DLA), whose mandate is to provide the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, and Public Safety the leadership, world-class sciences and technologies capabilities in materials science.

EDUCATION
- Enrolment in a thesis based master’s degree program or doctoral degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in engineering or materials science.

- Completion of a least one (1) post-graduate course in materials.

Degree equivalency

KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of the principals and practices of science investigation.
- Knowledge of the principles of material deformation.

ABILITY
- Ability to communicate effectively orally.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

- Completion of post-graduate course work in any of the following subjects:
• physical metallurgy
• fracture of materials
• performance of materials
• finite element analysis

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
- Experience applying finite element analysis to structural analysis problems with non-linear material deformation.
- Experience applying finite element analysis to structural analysis problem with dynamic loading.
- Experience applying finite element analysis to material failure problems.
- Experience using LSDYNA finite element software
- Experience conducting high strain rate material testing experiments
- Experience in publishing peer-reviewed scientific publications, such as a journal or conference papers, in recognized forums as a principle author.

KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of finite element analysis and its application to high strain rate material deformation and failure.
- Knowledge of experimental techniques in high strain rate material evaluation and characterization.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:
