This position provides technical and strategic advice and direction to support the update, delivery and management of initiatives such as the EnerGuide Rating System, ENERGY STAR for New Homes and R-2000 programs. This may involve: contributing to the development and maintenance of the technical aspects of the Housing Division initiatives, including research, performing data analysis and modeling; synthesize results; drafting technical documents; testing HOT2000, its related applications and managing software development process; and providing recommendations on technical issues to meet Division’s objectives. The technical advisor requires an excellent knowledge of residential energy efficient housing technologies and practices, building science, as well as familiarity with the Canadian residential construction/renovation industries. Solid communication skills are necessary as well as the ability to translate complex ideas and concepts into accessible language for the lay person. This is a team position with considerable independence, collaborative work and coordination within and with other groups.
A pool of (fully or partially) qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures, various linguistic requirements, various language requirements, various security requirements, various conditions of employment, various operational requirements, and for various locations.

Education:
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, geological engineering, naval architecture or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position, such as building engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering.
- Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position (some positions may require eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada without regard for the field of specialization).
Experience:
- Experience* in conducting technical analyses, assessments or reviews.
- Experience* in solving complex*** technical problems.
- Experience* in providing technical support to senior management**, professionals or the general public.
- Experience* in conducting data analysis or technical studies.
*Experience is defined as the depth, breadth and complexity of experience normally acquired with having performed work, as part of the regular duties of the candidate, for a period of at least two (2) years following graduation from a post-secondary institution.
** Senior management is defined as manager-level and above.
***Complex is defined as Issues involving multiple stakeholders, critical timelines and a high degree of importance or as having at least two of the following characteristics A) multi-stakeholder, B) sensitive, C) highly technical, D) precedent setting, E) having a major organization wide-impact, F) high profile (ex: media or public attention)”.
Asset Qualifications - Experience:
- Experience with extracting, organizing and synthesizing data from a database and performing research.
- Experience in using HOT2000 simulation software and in interpreting results from a building science perspective.
- Experience in providing engineering support for the delivery of initiatives related to housing in a multi stakeholder environment.
- Experience in conducting energy evaluations, retrofits or construction, applied to Canadian low-rise housing.
- Experience managing software development.
Operational Requirements:
