Duties

Operates, monitors, inspects, maintains and repairs high and low pressure boilers, pressure vessels, feed water systems, chemical feed systems, storage vessels, heat distribution and related equipment and other systems such as cooling, electric power generation and the pumping and storage of fuel.

Initiates emergency procedures to restore heating and/or other services in the event of power failures and /or interruption of fuel supply.

Responds to trouble calls inside and outside the plant and takes action to resolve the issue.

Monitors heating and other systems at remote sites.

Maintains operating logs and compiles data on plant operations, production and labour, fuel and material costs.

Investigates, inspects, tests and reports on any conditions that could affect the security and safety of the plant and personnel.

In this case, we encourage you to apply for this staffing process and to put your experience at the service of the dynamic team of the Real Property Operations Unit (RPOU) of Quebec to become one of our full time fixed machinery mechanics.

The role of the RPOU within DND is to provide building and infrastructure maintenance and repair services as well as to handle the day-to-day operations of the Department's real property portfolio, which includes a wide variety of buildings such as office buildings, airports, secure communications hubs, ammunition depots, thermal power plants, road infrastructure, control towers, hangars, schools, etc. The role of the thermal power plant operators in this organization is to operate a Class 2 or 1 thermal power plant to provide steam heating and cooling services to the garrison buildings.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one indeterminate position (permanent) and one determinate position (temporary) in Montreal at the CFB Garrison Longue-Pointe, Quebec. A pool of qualified candidates may be created and used to staff similar positions with various tenures and security profiles.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

High School Diploma from a learning institution recognized by the ministère de l’Éducation du Québec (or equivalent at the provincial/territorial level)

Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in Stationary Engine Mechanics with a valid certificate third class power energy or qualification judged equivalent by the employer.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the functioning, maintenance and control of high-pressure and/or low-pressure steam installation.

Knowledge of thermal installations supplying high and low pressure steam and of steam distribution networks.
Knowledge of the laws, regulations and applicable codes in the functioning and maintenance of heating apparatus.
Knowledge of the analysis and control process of water boilers.
Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations.

Ability to follow safety practices and procedures
Ability to operate, adjust and fix high and low pressure steam equipment
Ability to solve problems related to a heating plant operation
Ability to communicate orally and in writing

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Have to be eligible to apply for a Security authorization: Enhanced reliability check.

Hold and maintain a Class 5 driver license from the province of Quebec (or equivalent at the provincial/territorial level) and provide a copy of their drivers file from the SAAQ (or equivalent at the provincial/territorial level) in order to be able to obtain and maintain a DND404 driver’s license.
