Duties

Administrative Assistants/Clerks with the Department of National Defence perform a variety of duties which may include: reception; records management; data entry and retrieval; document creation, processing or tracking; coordinating or supporting meetings or events; and use and maintenance of office equipment and supplies. The specific duties vary across positions/organizations as does the scope of responsibilities assigned. This work may be performed within a range of organizations/work environments such as office, warehouse or maintenance facility work settings. The work may require lifting and carrying of heavy items or boxes or reaching for folders or items from a range of high to low shelving/storage areas.

Work environment

Located in Central Labrador, the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is a vibrant community with the largest Indigenous population in Newfoundland & Labrador. With a diverse culture of Innu, Inuit, Metis, and Settlers, we are proud of our strong hunting, fishing and trapping heritage. Rich in natural resources and with a strong connection to the environment, we are surrounded by the beauty of the Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve, the Grand (Churchill) River, and Lake Melville. Happy Valley-Goose Bay is accessible by Air, Sea & Road. However, with over 1100 km of highway, 6,000 km of coastline and 294,300 sq. km of landmass, Labrador is one of the last great wilderness areas on the planet. A trip to Central Labrador is an adventure and travelers should plan accordingly. Coming from mainland Canada, Route 500 is fully paved and stretches from the Quebec border to Happy Valley-Goose Bay (530 km). Coming from the island portion of NL, Route 510 is partially paved and stretches along the east and south coasts from Blanc Sablon, QC (619 km). Once here, Route 520 will take you to nearby communities of North West River and Sheshatshiu Innu Reserve (42km).

The mission of 5 Wing Goose Bay is to conduct NORAD and other Canadian Armed Forces operations. As the Eastern gateway to the Canadian Arctic, its strategic location enables 5 Wing to play a key role in protecting the sovereignty of Canada and in the air defence of North America. Their location and the challenging airspace and terrain on and above Labrador and Quebec also allows 5 Wing Goose Bay to offer an outstanding environment for the conduct of joint and combined training for the Canadian Armed Forces, NATO partners and our allies.
