The Director and Deputy Surveyor General Northern Region exercises delegated responsibilities of the Surveyor General under the Canada Lands Surveys Act and various other legislation and manages the delivery of Canada's Survey Program and delegated responsibilities for the Surveyor General for the Northern Region. He/She directs the activities of the Northern Region operational units which includes: managing Other Government Department (OGD) geomatics programs, related to: Aboriginal land claims and self-government initiatives, National Parks, regional marine issues and support for the devolution of land management responsibilities to the territorial governments. The Director and Deputy Surveyor General Northern Region is responsible to ensure effective and efficient processes are in place for a wide variety of legal survey plans required to support land and resource development and to ensure that Canada's Survey Registry and cadastral data enable land transactions in support of economic development and that jurisdictional boundaries are well defined in support of effective land administration and to avoid conflict.
Director and Deputy Surveyor General Northern Region is an expert land surveyor and works closely with key clients in the North towards the development of operational plans for legal survey services. He/She provides the leadership to support devolution and modernization of land management systems as well as providing local liaison in the north for the Lands and Minerals Sector (LMS).
Director and Deputy Surveyor General Northern Region translates vision and policy into concrete direction and champions the change management projects required to transform and modernize the Canada Lands Surveys System and the various land registries in the north.

►A Canada Lands Surveyor's commission AND licence to practice issued by the Association of Canada Lands Surveyors OR a licence or authority to practice as a land surveyor in any province in Canada.
Note: If this condition is met by having a licence or authority to practice as a land surveyor in a province, then the successful candidate must obtain a Canada Lands Surveyor's commission AND licence to practice within 2 years of appointment to the position.
►Significant* and recent* experience in partnership development with multiple levels of government, academia, industry and non-government organizations. This could include federal, other government departments, agencies, provinces, territories and professional associations.
►Experience in providing strategic advice, making recommendations, writing and presenting briefing material to senior management** on complex*** land management issues.
►Significant* and recent* experience in the planning and managing of human**** and financial***** resources.
* Significant and recent experience means a minimum of two years within the last three years at the EX minus 02 or above (Private sector equivalent = Director level or above, responsible for managing multi-disciplinary geomatics projects) dealing with a broad range of complex activities.
** Senior management is defined as Director General (Private sector equivalent = Senior Director, owner, CEO, etc) level and above
*** Complex is defined as subject matter that involves multi-layered consideration, broad and horizontal impacts, and multiple stakeholders/players who have conflicting, competing and complimentary priorities (for example, jurisdictional issues, land transfer boundary issues, devolution activities, etc.)
**** Human Resources Management is defined as: applicants must clearly demonstrate that they have supervised staff, assigned work, managed and assessed performance and developed or contributed to the development of staffing plans. Applicants must indicate the number of staff they supervised. Clear and specific examples should be provided by candidates in their application and demonstrate evidence of accountabilities, deliverables and level of complexity.
***** Financial management is defined as: applicants must show evidence of managing and being accountable for a budget. This experience is defined as being responsible for sound financial planning, forecasting and reporting. Applicants must also indicate the size of the budget they managed directly. Occupational Certification:
