Duties

Challenges of the position include processing tissue samples for numerous health metrics that may require novel method development. Data will be derived, synthesized and analyzed from tissue samples and IK together to describe beluga health. Data and results will be prepared for community reports and peer review publications. These publications require a standardized peer review process that must be followed.

Work environment

The Arctic Aquatic Research Division of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is based at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Division provides information and advice to support the management of Arctic fisheries resources, their habitat and Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and on the Yukon North Slope. Successful management and conservation of these resources depends on acquiring, interpreting and sharing biological information, the processes affecting them and the ecosystem of which they are part.

The responsibilities of this position are to investigate the health of beluga whales with the specific evaluation of pathogens, stress levels and ecology using appropriate analytical tools and Indigenous Knowledge (IK). This will require working closely with Inuit Wildlife boards, hunters and community members to help develop a suitable study design.

Enrolment in a PhD program in a field of study related Arctic marine ecosystems in an accredited Canadian University.

Degree equivalency

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.

- Experience collecting, analyzing and reporting scientific data
- Experience in writing and communicating research findings
- Experience conducting research in the Arctic
- Experience working with research teams and Indigenous community members

- Knowledge of Arctic marine mammals
- Knowledge of methods of measuring health in marine mammals
- Knowledge about Traditional Knowledge and/or Inuit knowledge
* Traditional knowledge (or indigenous knowledge) refers to the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities. Developed from experience gained over the centuries and adapted to the local culture and environment, traditional knowledge is transmitted orally from generation to generation.
