Although the immediate intent of this Job Opportunity Advertisement is to staff indeterminately, applicants should be aware that a pool of qualified candidates (fully assessed or partially assessed) may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various language requirements listed in the Language Requirements section. Education:

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences related to the duties of the position such as veterinary medicine, chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology or toxicology, or the employer approved alternative.

Note:
The employer-approved alternative is an acceptable master's or Bachelor’s degree coupled with research, training and experience in the field of veterinary chemicals in food producing animals. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position as mentioned above. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree caliber.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

Research experience involving food producing animals and/or laboratory animals.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of risk analysis pertaining to residues of veterinary drugs in food-producing animals.
Knowledge of research in the area of veterinary drugs.

Abilities:

Ability to analyse and critically evaluate experimental data.
Ability to set objectives and priorities.
Ability to provide advice and defend recommendations.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Asset Education:

Ph.D. in Veterinary Medicine or Animal Sciences.

Productivity/Recognition:
Demonstrated productivity in the form of authorship / co-authorship of scientific papers published in peer reviewed journals; recognition by the professional community within the related scientific specialty.

Degree equivalency

Asset Experience:

Experience in the evaluation of risks to human health from the presence of chemical residues in food.
Experience in consulting and negotiating with other Canadian government officials, with industry representatives and non-governmental organizations.

Asset Knowledge:

Knowledge of the scientific principles and procedures related to the evaluation of veterinary drugs in food animals.
Knowledge of principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.

Asset Abilities:

Ability to supervise a scientific team.

Operational Requirements:
The incumbent must meet and maintain the conditions of employment throughout their employment.
