Work environment

Longer fire seasons create a threat to the social and economic health and safety of Canadians who live and work in the forest. We are seeking scientists to support Natural Resources Canada’s efforts to respond to this challenge by conducting social and physical science research to assess the risk and impact of wildland fire to people, property and infrastructure in Canada.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar SE-RES positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements (English or French Essential and Bilingual BBB/BBB or CBC/CBC), various security requirements and various conditions of employment.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural or physical sciences, or the employer approved alternative.

Note: the employer-approved alternative is an acceptable master’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized university and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.

Degree equivalency

Experience in designing and conducting research studies.
Experience in conducting studies applicable to forest fire behaviour or effects in either the field, laboratory or by modeling.
Experience writing scientific papers.

Various language requirements

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of the management of forest fires in Canada.
Knowledge of fire activity and its impact on Canadian forests.
Knowledge of the physical fire environment (e.g. the processes that influence how wildfires initiate, spread, extinguish and impact the forest).
Knowledge of models and methods for the characterisation of the wildland fire environment (including the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System) and how such systems and information are used in wildfire decision-making.

Ability to develop research proposals.
Ability to work in or lead multidisciplinary research projects.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to prepare and give presentations.
