Duties

Integrated Response Planning (Term)
This position will require writing ‘state-of-knowledge’ reports on various coastal ports of Canada to support the development of petroleum spill response plans. This will require the employee to research, compile and review relevant information, data and other materials, as well as coordinate the editing, translation and publishing of these reports.

Gully Marine Protected Area Reporting (Term)
This position will compile and analyze physical, chemical and biological data collected by the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) within the Gully MPA. A final report will be generated to describe environmental conditions in the Gully MPA and recommendations for an optimized monitoring model. Through consultation with key stake holders, the candidate will develop scripts and analytical products that will serve as the backbone for future Gully MPA environmental reporting.

Delayed Mode Quality Control Development (Term)
This position will develop quality control methods applicable to physical, chemical and biological oceanographic data for autonomous underwater instrumentation such as gliders and Argo floats. The position will interact closely with the national data management team for these platforms and advise on system development.

Dynamic Hydrographic Products (Term)
This position will support the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s ongoing Dynamic Hydrographic Products initiative. The position will require the application of physical science experience, knowledge and abilities to the development of state of the art tools for emerging dynamic electronic navigational data production, management and delivery systems.

Intent of the process

The intention is to staff four PC-02 positions on a temporary basis for various durations. A pool will be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis in Dartmouth, NS or St. Andrews, NB.

- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

- Experience conducting research in the field of physical/chemical oceanography or other relevant physical science.
- Experience participating in or leading, short-term multidisciplinary projects either at-sea, in the field, or in a laboratory setting.
- Experience compiling, analyzing and presenting scientific data or information.
- Experience writing or contributing to the preparation of scientific papers and reports within a specialized area of physical/environmental science.

- Graduation with a M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

- Experience in the operation of oceanographic instrumentation packages and computer-based control systems as used aboard modern research vessels on missions for physical data collection.
- Experience in quality control processing of oceanographic, meteorological, or other environmental data.
- Experience with operating autonomous underwater instrumentation (e.g., gliders, floats)
- Experience in time series and spectral analysis of oceanographic data.
- Experience in scientific software development, computer programming, testing and debugging in support of scientific research projects.
- Experience in analysis of data using modern scientific programming languages, such as, but not limited to R, Python or MATLAB.
- Experience in scientific data management and database design.
- Experience in the development and deployment of scientific data products on Web platforms.
- Experience in the scientific analysis of satellite remote sensing data.
- Experience in administration of the Linux operating system.
- Experience in utilizing and/or developing parallelized computer programs for shared or distributed CPU and memory computers.
- Experience in ocean circulation modelling.
- Experience on an oceanographic research expedition of at least 7 days duration.
- Experience conducting scientific field work in coastal waters on small vessels
- Experience as lead author of science publications in a physical sciences context.
- Experience using EndNote or other citation software.
- Experience presenting scientific information at conferences, workshops or meetings with managers, stakeholders or the public.
- Experience studying the behaviour, fate and treatment of oil spills in marine environments
- Experience in the calibration and operation of in-situ particle counters, fluorometers and CTDs
- Experience processing and analyzing data from in-situ particle counters
- Experience conducting research in the field of acoustic oceanography.
- Experience with acoustic wave propagation modeling.
- Experience in hydrographic data collection, instrumentation and procedures
- Experience in the observation (data collection and instrumentation), analysis and synthesis of water level and current data to support both existing hydrographic applications and the development of new hydrographic tools.
- Experience providing scientific information, advice and recommendations to managers, researchers, or external clients on issues respecting the conduct, methodologies, and the findings of scientific projects and investigations.
