Duties

Manages the provision of psychological and other inter-disciplinary mental health services to federal offenders in institutional, including Regional Treatment Centres (Psychiatric Hospital or Intermediate Health Care Unit) or community settings.

Work environment

Work with federal inmates, inside federal correctional institutions or in the community with federal parolees, in a managerial capacity. This work involves exposure to an environment that is sometimes hostile, with offenders confined in correctional institutions or on release in the community. The work sometimes involves exposure to multiple interruptions, a lack of control over the pace of work, deadlines and conflicting priorities, which may lead to stress related to workload.

EDUCATION

Graduation with a Master’s or Doctorate (PhD) degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialisation in clinical, forensic, or counselling psychology or in another psychological speciality relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Significant* experience in the provision of psychological services (including mental health services) to offenders within a correctional environment (institutional or community) or psychiatric hospital setting.

*Significant is normally defined as having at least 3 years of experience.

Knowledge of ethical principles guiding the professional practice of psychology.

Knowledge of principles and applications of psychological services (including mental health services), such as assessment, treatment, programs and crisis intervention.

Knowledge of the issues and trends affecting the management and delivery of mental health programs.

Knowledge of relevant legislation and Correctional Service Canada policies (e.g. Commissioner’s Directives).
