CanmetMINING is interested in furthering study on the development of a sensor for the detection of chromium. Chromium represents an opportunity for Canada to enter an emerging and globally strategic market. The main application of chromium is in the stainless steel industry, which is vital to modern society. A Ring of Fire deposit in northern Ontario is the only commercial quantity of chromite in North America and the fourth largest deposit in the world. The candidate will be involved in the development of a sensor to detect Cr(VI) in mine leachate and digestive fluids, and the estimation of exposure risks. In addition to testing environmental samples for the presence of Cr(VI), this work will apply bioaccessibility methods to estimate how much Cr(VI) may reach the blood when ingested (i.e. bioaccessible fraction) for site-specific conditions corresponding with the proposed mining environment of the Ring of Fire (Northern Ontario). The goal of this research is to produce a device that will be highly accurate and selective.
