Duties

The Surveyor General Branch (SGB) of Natural Resources Canada is the Government of Canada centre of expertise for land surveying, geodesy and the international boundary between Canada and the United States. SGB is comprised of three lines of business.

Firstly, the Canadian Geodetic Survey provides the fundamental reference frame and standards for the measurement of latitude, longitude, elevation and gravity anywhere in Canada, and monitors motions of our continental land mass in support of geomatics and geoscience.

Secondly, the Surveyor General for Canada Lands provides the framework that identifies, documents, registers and protects boundaries and property rights for Canada Lands, which in turn provide boundary certainty that stakeholders can rely upon.

Thirdly, the Canadian Section of the International Boundary Commission (IBC) http://www.internationalboundarycommission.org/, in cooperation with its United States counterpart, maintains the land boundary between Canada and the United States and regulates the construction of works within three metres of the boundary.

As a Senior Surveyor, you will provide professional surveying advice and technical expertise to a variety of government clients and you will assist other survey professionals and the public on all aspects of the Canada Lands Surveys System. You will conduct field surveys and will prepare survey requirements for contracting of legal surveys. You will work as part of a team to resolve complex boundary and land tenure issues using your extensive surveying background and detailed historical research of survey related documents. You will review survey returns from other professional to ensure compliance with survey standards and tenure documents.

Intent of the process

The intent is to staff one (1) position (permanent, full-time) in Toronto (300 - 655 Bay Street).

A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada in Toronto, Ontario at the EN-SUR-03 group and level with:
●various tenures (determinate period or permanent);
● various language requirements (English Essential and Bilingual (BBB/BBB)) and various methods for staffing bilingual positions (imperative or non-imperative); and
●various conditions of employment.

1) A Canada Lands Surveyor's commission AND licence to practice issued by the Association of Canada Lands Surveyors, OR,
2) A licence to practice as an Ontario Land Surveyor in the cadastral discipline.

Note: The successful candidate must have a license to practice cadastral surveying as both an Ontario Land Surveyor and a Canada Lands Surveyor within 2 years of appointment to the position.

►Experience:
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in providing boundary or cadastral survey services at a professional level*.

*Professional level is defined as work experience gained after having received a Land Survey accreditation.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in land survey theory and practice or other related field such as geomatics, geodetic sciences or remote sensing.

Degree equivalency

►Occupational certification:
A licence to practice as an Ontario Land Surveyor in the cadastral discipline.
A Canada Lands Surveyor's commission AND licence to practice issued by the Association of Canada Lands Surveyors.

►Experience:
A minimum of 2 years experience managing Geomatics Projects at a professional level*.

*Professional level is defined as work experience gained after having received a Land Survey accreditation.

►Knowledge:
Knowledge of the Land Survey Systems of Canada Lands (including Acts and Regulations).
Knowledge of the Land Survey Systems of Ontario (including Acts and Regulations).
Knowledge of natural boundary law in Ontario.

►Abilities and Skills:
Ability to manage geomatics projects.
Ability to interpret and create legal land descriptions.
Ability to supervise staff.
