Duties

Provide skilled mechanical diagnostics, maintenance and repair of heavy and light duty agricultural vehicles and equipment, at an Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research and Development Center.

Work environment

The Swift Current Research and Development Centre specializes in developing wheat crop varieties, increasing the nutrition of forages and improving agronomic practices of field crops; all in support of Western Canadian producers. These programs depend on farm equipment operating at peak performance. Therefore, the mechanic is a key person in the success of the Centre’s research. The right person for the position must be knowledgeable, a self-starter, and able to solve problems on a variety of equipment (e.g., tractors, swathers, bailers, sprayers, combines, seeders), including those that were designed or modified in-house to meet research needs. Equally important to being a quality mechanic, the position requires a person able to communicate with multiple research technicians, and handle the seasonal pressures of ensuring equipment is ready for the field or quickly repaired should it breakdown at critical times. With the right aptitude and personality, this position offers an opportunity to become a long-term, valued member of a research support team supporting the agriculture sector.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to staff the described position on a permanent full-time basis.

In addition, a pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to staff similar positions with various tenures.

EDUCATION
Successful completion of secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Journeyperson Certificate in Agricultural Equipment, Heavy Duty mechanics or in a field related to the position.

EXPERIENCE
Experience in operating and maintaining agricultural/farm related equipment.
Experience in servicing, maintaining, repairing and overhauling gas/diesel vehicles and equipment.
Experience in electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics and mechanics of equipment.
Experience in troubleshooting units, analyzing faults, recommending and implementing corrective measures.
Experience utilizing detailed drawings and trades manuals.
Experience in computer skills and programs for record keeping and internet searches for repair parts, repair procedures, e-mail etc...
Experience in welding and metal fabrication.
Experience in metal machining (ie. Turning a shaft down on the metal lathe).
Experience in the repair of air conditioning systems used in agricultural equipment.
