The Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO), Natural Resources Canada, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa, is looking for a graduate student for a research project on cumulative effects of permafrost thawing on surface water resources in Northern Canada. The successful applicant will be part of a multi-year study focused on the application of remote sensing technologies and methodologies to support cumulative effects monitoring. The project is aimed at potentially two study areas, one in northern Quebec/Labrador and one in the Yukon or the Northwest Territories.
The student will develop novel remote sensing algorithms to contribute to environmental monitoring, advancing methodologies to support cumulative effects assessment and monitoring at regional scales. The student should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals or conferences. Planning data acquisitions, pursuing field campaigns, and analysis of remote sensing imagery are all potential activities that can be included.
All experimental work will be performed in northern Canada and the analysis will be conducted at the University of Ottawa with some visits to the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation.
During fieldwork, the candidate may be exposed to inclement weather, insects, rough terrain and may need to wear cumbersome protective gear. Participation in fieldwork activities may be required for up to one month per year.
A student will be hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) with the purpose to accomplish research and complete a thesis or dissertation. Duration of the RAP will depend on academic level: • Masters Students (1- 2 years). • Doctorate Students (1-3 years). Extensions may be possible.
