The need is to staff one indeterminate position in Saskatoon (SK).
A pool of qualified candidates may be established. This pool may be used to staff identical or similar positions with various language requirements and various security requirements within the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada across Canada. These positions may be staffed on an indeterminate or temporary basis.

► EDUCATION : Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in microbiology, molecular ecology, or a field relevant to the work to be performed.
► EXPERIENCE :
• Experience in performing molecular microbiology analyses on environmental samples (DNA and RNA extraction).
• Experience in culturing microorganisms.
• Experience operating equipment dedicated for molecular and genomic analyses (such as, but not limited to, PCR, DGGE, Q-PCR, or sequencing equipment).
► EDUCATION ASSET :
• Graduation with a master's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in microbiology, molecular ecology, or a field relevant to the work to be performed.
► EXPERIENCE ASSET :
• Experience with any of Primer, Minitab, R, Python, or other sequencing-associated bioinformatics software programs and databases.
► OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
• Willing to travel for one or two weeks at a time on work-related travels
• Willing to work irregular hours if required.
• Willing to engage in field work as required.

► KNOWLEGE :
• Knowledge of techniques and practices associated with general molecular microbiology (such as, but not limited to, culturing, nucleic acid extractions, and laboratory maintenance).
• Knowledge of instrumental procedures and analytic techniques for analyzing microbial communities, specific microbes and genes.
► ABILITIES :
• Ability to operate, maintain and calibrate instrumentation specifically dedicated for molecular and genomic analyses.
• Ability to plan and organize analyses to optimize supplies, reagents and instrumentation time.
• Ability to analyze and interpret measurements to evaluate experimental data.
• Ability to develop and maintain databases to support scientific projects.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

► KNOWLEDGE ASSET :
• Knowledge of metagenomics sequencing technologies, their operation and maintenance.
