Geospatial Research Assistant - Research Affiliate Program

Various Locations.
A student position of 25 hours per week, for a 1.5 year period, from Fall 2019 to Spring 2021.
Master student will receive $17,500 per year or $21,000 per year for PhD student, payable in equal installments three times a year.

Duties

Research work anywhere in Canada. Working with a supervisor, Geospatial Research Scientist, at the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation, Ottawa.

Graduate assistants are generally responsible for a specific body of research related to the outcomes of the program offering the assignment. Assistants with substantial Geographic Information System (GIS) training will be required.

In particular, projects will be seeking GIS support of all kinds at various levels of proficiency. This may include cartography, image analysis and interpretation, database construction, and data management and interpretation. Research activities may be related to flood inundation mapping using high resolution LiDAR datasets as a base, and a derived Height Above Nearest Drainage (HAND) model.

Education:

• Enrolled or eligible to enroll in a geomatics related graduate program (Master or PhD).
• Graduation with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) or Engineering in Geomatics, Remote Sensing, Geodesy.
• Successful completion of courses in GIS technologies.
• Successful completion of courses in geomatics.
• Successful completion of courses in environmental studies, hydrology.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

In the context of student recruitment in the federal public service, experience can be acquired through studies, work experience or volunteer activities.

EX1 • Experience working with vector and raster datasets.
EX2 • Experience in the creation and analysis of 3D datasets (e.g: digital elevation models, LiDAR, etc.).
EX3 • Experience using mapping software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Global Mapper or MapInfo.
EX4 • Experience in air photo interpretation, satellite imagery analysis and processing or using specialized remote sensing software such as PCI Geomatica or ENVI.
EX5 • Experience programming with Python, C#, R, JavaScript or MATLAB.
EX6 • Experience performing research.

Knowledge:

K1 • Knowledge of spatial data processing and analysis
