Duties

The primary role of the Special Forces unit psychologist resides within the evolving operational psychology realm. The expanded scope and functions of the unit psychologist include Assessment and Selection for Special Forces, psychological consultation to the Selection and Training cadre, subject-matter expertise provision to the Chain-of-Command related to individual and unit resilience and psychological health, member and unit education/operational debriefs, program evaluation, and member clinical referrals.

The unit psychologist will also perform, in a secondary capacity, more traditional clinical psychological services within a multidisciplinary mental health team, including mental health screenings, diagnostic assessments, and individual psychotherapy. Furthermore, there is an opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of mental health and resilience training unique to Special Operations Forces.

The embedded unit psychologist reports administratively to the unit’s Chain of Command, and is supported professionally by the CANSOFCOM Chief Psychologist located at Headquarters.

Intent of the process

CANSOFCOM has the below positions to be filled:
1) Trenton : 1 position, indeterminate, full-time: Special operations unit psychologist

2) Petawawa: 1 position, indeterminate, full-time: Special operations unit psychologist

EDUCATION
- Graduation with a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Psychology from a recognized post-secondary institution (equivalence in training is determined by the provincial/territorial College of psychologists who issue the autonomous practice license)

Degree equivalency

PROFESSIONAL LICENSE
Registered for autonomous practice with one of the Canadian provincial or territorial College of Psychologists and be able to practice in clinical psychology with adults. (Copy of license must be submitted with application)

EXPERIENCE:
EX1: *Breadth of experience in conducting psychological assessments with adults, including cognitive, personality and emotional/ behavioral functioning evaluations for clinical and non-clinical purposes (e.g. selection).
EX2: *Breadth of experience in providing evidence-based psychotherapy to adults, for mild to significant psychological, personal, social and occupational issues.
EX3: *Breadth of experience in providing psychological consultation/advice (e.g., to third parties, program colleagues, managers, leaders).
EX4: Experience in developing or/and delivering mental health prevention services (e.g. group psychoeducation)

*Breadth of experience is defined as having performed a broad range of various related psychological activities as a licensed psychologist. Those activities demonstrate that the individual possesses the full span of expertise and experience required for the position.

- Willing and able to work overtime on occasion.
- Willing and able to travel internationally and nationally on occasion (Please note that there is no mandatory deployment to high-risk missions).
- Holding a Valid Canadian Passport
