Duties

Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions’ Communications Directorate is seeking a Communications Advisor (English-language Writer-Editor). The selected candidate will be expected to:

• Ensure the quality of text written or translated in English (news releases, Q&As, tweets, web content, key messages, etc.)

• Translate documents which may be complex and are often urgent

• Write persuasive, high-quality copy

• Serve as resident expert on English-language terminology

• Coordinate special projects

The candidate is highly organized, enjoys working as part of a team and adapts well to an environment where priorities are often changing.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THIS PROCESS

STAGE 1 – You tell us about your background
Simply submit your résumé and answer the questions in the application process (hyperlink at the bottom of this poster). The questions pertain to your experiences, and it’s important to give us concrete examples to illustrate them well. It isn’t enough to tell us that your writing skills are valued; tell us what you’ve written (articles, news releases, etc.) and specify the relevant aspects of the context, for example the target clients, the nature of the project, the results achieved, etc. That will help us determine whether you will be evaluated in greater depth. If you are asked to specify dates or time periods, remember to mention them.

STAGE 2 – You show us what you can do!
If you reach this stage, you will be asked to demonstrate your skills. To do so, we may use a variety of tools, including written tests or online evaluations. Don’t worry, though -- we’ll give you time to prepare. This is a very important stage for us and for you, too, because it enables you to demonstrate your abilities and talent. It will take more time than the other stages, but the end result will be worth the effort.

STAGE 3 – We get acquainted
If you have what it takes and you successfully demonstrated your skills, our selection committee will be pleased to meet with you for an in-person or virtual interview to get to know you better. This will also enable us to determine what other assets you can bring to our team.

STAGE 4 – We validate
At this stage, we validate what we have learned about you during the process by contacting the references you provide.

STAGE 5 – If you pre-qualify
The immediate goal of this process is to staff a position on a determinate basis. However, candidates should know that a pool of qualified candidates (whether fully or partially assessed) will be created and may be used to staff similar positions within this group and at this level.

In addition, this process may be used for various tenures (acting appointments, assignment, deployment, indeterminate, specified period, secondment), security requirements and conditions of employment within Canada economic development for Quebec regions.

EDUCATION

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in translation and/or extensive experience* in translation, revision, editing and/or proofreading.

Note:
*“Extensive experience” means approximately five (5) years of experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Recent* and extensive** experience in editing and proofreading English-language documents, as well as quality control in terms of English-language linguistic services.

Recent* and extensive** experience writing documents in English intended for diverse external and internal audiences.

Recent* and extensive** experience translating documents intended for diverse external and internal audiences from French to English.

Recent* experience providing advice to clients, colleagues and senior management regarding terminology.

Notes:
*“Recent experience” means at least three (3) years of experience within the past five (5) years.

**“Extensive experience” means at least five (5) years of experience.

Certification from a professional association of translators**

**A professional association of translators is defined as a national or provincial body representing professional translators, such as the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ), the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO), the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta (ATIA), etc.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Experience in managing special translation/revision projects.

Experience working in writing, editing or translating within a government organization.

Experience ensuring the adaptation of translated material.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of current translation, editing and terminology research tools.

ABILITIES

Ability to translate documents from French to English and to edit English-language documents intended for diverse audiences with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet a heavy workload.

Ability to write documents and speeches in English, and to adapt content for various internal and external purposes, based on the target audiences.

Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and meet often conflicting deadlines in a demanding and fast-paced environment with continuously changing and competing priorities.

Ability to provide linguistic services (terminology, grammar, advice on writing, editing and proofreading).

Ability to analyze complex issues and to integrate them into communications products in language accessible to the general public.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
