Field-oriented geologist with experience in accretionary orogens. Requires a good working knowledge / interest in field mapping techniques in deformed and metamorphosed orogenic belts, and in the application of analytical techniques (such as geochronology, isotopes, or igneous petrology) to gain a better understanding of the tectonic setting and processes responsible for the formation of the varied igneous provinces in Canada.
Activities include:
• Planning, organizing, conducting research projects and/or field work under guidance, that contribute to improvements in theories and/or techniques through the innovation or modification of concepts, theories and approaches and/or new or modified solutions.
• Conducting field-based mapping at a variety of scales, integrating with and contributing to regional maps
• Collecting field samples to elucidate the tectonic setting of a region of interest
• Building research teams, mentoring and collaborating with students, and fostering working relationships with academic institutions, provincial government partners and industry clients.
• Liaising with industry and First Nation stakeholders
• Communicating results including write, publish papers, reports documenting, and interpreting results of research.
• Representing own research in meetings/events and discussing research outcomes. Attend workshops and/or conferences and present paper(s) on own research.
• Contributing to expert-reviewed research publications.

The immediate intent is to staff two positions (permanent) located in Vancouver, BC (1500 - 605 Robson Street).
A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process and may be used to staff identical or similar SE-RES positions (full-time) within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential or Bilingual), various methods for staffing a bilingual position (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CBB/CBB, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

►Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree or employer approved alternative from a recognized post-secondary institution in earth sciences applied to one or more of the following: structural geology, igneous petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, metamorphic petrology, stratigraphy, or other specialization relevant to the duties of the position.
Note: The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do independent research of doctoral degree calibre.
Experience (either during PhD program or work):
►Processing, integrating, modelling and interpreting multisource geological data sets.
►Developing, implementing, and delivering field-based research on ancient orogenic systems, independently or as a specialist within a multidisciplinary team.

►Understanding of mapping, sampling, and analytical methods related to regional scale geological mapping.
►Understanding of architecture and evolution of modern tectonic environments, particularly magmatic arcs, and associated orogenic systems.
►Productivity/Recognition: Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
•Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
•Operational research and scientific analysis;
•Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
►Ability to collect and interpret multidisciplinary datasets, such as structural, metamorphic, geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological, geochronological, thermo-chronological, or paleontological data, to formulate models of the tectonic evolution of orogenic systems.
►Ability to generate original research proposals and demonstrate flexibility in research methodology.
