Duties

What to Expect

Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) is looking to staff one (1) Primary Care Practice Consultant position in the Regional Nursing Office. The Nurse Practice Consultant will support the delivery of health services which are evidence based, respectful of culture, and dedicated to enhancing the health of First Nations people. The clinical focus of this position is on the provision of 24/7 Primary Care Services in Alberta’s three remote/isolated First Nations communities. This includes urgent and emergent service delivery. You will be expected to occasionally travel to these communities to connect with the health teams.

What You Will Be Doing

You will provide clinical and practice support to nurses providing Primary Care services within Alberta’s First Nation communities. You will be responsible for developing protocols, policies and procedures intended to ensure that nursing service provision consistently incorporates evidence informed practices in the community setting; chart audits will be performed routinely and audit tool design may be expected. Working within the Regional Nursing Office you will collaborate with colleagues and other programs in an effort to produce resources that are comprehensive and meet the identified needs of mandatory community programs. You will be responsible for the creation and utilization of tools intended to support effective knowledge transfer and you will also be responsible for the creation of clinical sessions designed to enhance skills of the Primary Care nurse.

Nurse Practice Consultant (Primary Care)

The Nurse Practice Consultant provides Primary Care nursing expertise and direction to nursing staff responsible for the delivery of all Primary Care-related programming delivered in community. These programs include but are not restricted to: promoting health, preventing disease and injury, protecting population health, as well as a focus on curative, urgent and emergent care, rehabilitation, and supportive care for all ages. The Nurse Practice Consultant will place a strong emphasis on community development informed by evidence based research that contributes to best practice program delivery and supports competent practitioners.

Work environment

Indigenous Services Canada is the Federal department responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health, while respecting individual choices and circumstances. The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch at Indigenous Services Canada supports the delivery of a range of primary care, public health and health promotion services on-reserve and in Inuit communities. It also provides drug, dental and ancillary health services to First Nations and Inuit people regardless of residence.

Education:

Graduation with a Master’s Degree in nursing from a recognized post-secondary institution.*

*Recognized post-secondary institution: Public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:

Eligible for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:

Recent* and significant** experience working as a Registered Nurse in a Primary Care, Urgent/Emergent and/or Intensive Care setting:

*Recent is defined as within the last 5 years

**Significant is defined as consisting of at least 2 cumulative years of experience with the candidate performing complex activities relating to the provision of Primary Care, Urgent/Emergent and/or Intensive Care.

Experience working in First Nation communities.

• Proficiency in speaking a First Nations’ language.
• Knowledge of current health issues in Canada and in First Nation communities.
• Current knowledge of adult education theories and practises/knowledge transfer.

• Occasional travel to rural and/or remote locations on gravel roads and/or in small aircraft.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• Current and continuous valid registration as a Registered Nurse and a member in good standing in the province where the position is located.
• Current CPR Certification, Health Provider Level C (to be renewed annually)
