Duties

This position is responsible for providing technical and research engineering support to the Renewable Heat R&D Group within CanmetENERGY-Ottawa Buildings and Renewables Group for the delivery of the Research, Development and Demonstration related to integrated advanced compact heat storage building energy systems and improvement of existing Canada’s satellite derived solar resource datasets.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bell’s Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. This location also features trails and walking paths as well as workplace wellness programs including running, fitness and mental health initiatives to boost employee morale and work/life balance.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one EN-ENG-02 position on an indeterminate basis.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar EN-ENG-02 positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements (English essential, English or French essential, bilingual) and profiles (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), for various security requirements, various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in engineering (mechanical, chemical, or systems design) or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience constructing and modifying laboratory test setups (systems and/or reactors) for the characterization of the properties and performance of sorption heat storage materials and systems.
Experience planning experimental test programs.
Experience writing technical reports, publications and research proposals
Experience presenting research results to technical audiences.

Knowledge of solid sorption heat storage materials (such as zeolite and/or salt hydrate composites) and systems.
Knowledge of laboratory measurement techniques used to measure properties of solid sorption heat storage materials.

A thesis based on a Master or Ph.D. Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of sorption thermal storage materials and systems based technology.

Degree equivalency

Experience in applying engineering theory and principles associated with renewable energy technologies.
Experience conducting research and/or technology development in the field of sorption thermal storage for building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications.
Experience working with CFD and CAD design and analytical tools, such as COMSOL and SolidWorks, and methods for designing and determining energy output of heat energy systems and components.
Experience working with TRNSYS research simulation tool for solar and or building HVAC system design and energy performance simulations.

Knowledge of engineering theories and principles associated with solar thermal energy and technologies
Knowledge of the Canadian weather engineering data files used by the scientific and engineering community for solar sand building energy calculations such as CWEEDs and CWECs data files.
Knowledge of geographic information system software and tools, such as ArcGIS, for the review of gridded solar resource dataset.
