Duties

Performs land and field plot work including but not limited to tillage and soil preparation, seeding and planting, fertilizer applications and irrigation, spraying of agrochemicals and mowing of grass, in support of research and field maintenance activities.

Performs greenhouse work including but not limited to preparation of potting media, seeding and planting, fertilizer applications and irrigation and spraying of agrochemicals, in support of research and other activities.

Operates hand and power tools in the performance of work duties.

Operates vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to the following: light and heavy trucks, tractors, gators, weed eaters, skid-steer loaders, dump trucks, irrigation equipment, forklifts, backhoes, mixers, generators, et., in the performance of work duties.

Performs preventative maintenance on greenhouse and field equipment, including but not limited to tillage implements, seeders, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, harvest equipment, etc.

Maintains, adjusts and makes minor repairs to tools, equipment and vehicles used in the performance of work duties.

Cleans and organizes materials and contents of assigned work areas, including but not limited to shops, construction sites, experimental plots, storage and mixing facilities, laboratories, greenhouses and field plots.

Keeps records of activities and supplies for required research and maintenance activities using electronic and / or manual methods.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff a full-time permanent Working Level Labourer in Agassiz, BC.

Anticipatory: A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a permanent full-time or part-time basis or on a temporary full-time or part-time basis for the location indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A secondary school diploma.

Degree equivalency

Experience working in a greenhouse or with field crops.

Experience in the operating and maintaining agricultural equipment.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

English essential

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of crops care and maintenance for research purposes.
Knowledge of basic mathematics and simple calculations.

Post secondary education related to agriculture.

Degree equivalency

Valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate.

Experience in an agricultural research setting.

Experience operating large tractors (50 to 100 horse power) and implements such as mowers, sprayers, cultivators and ploughs.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid driver’s license.
Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to work under variable weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise) with exposure to animal manure.
Known allergies must be controlled through use of protective mask and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
