Duties

• Collection, logging, transport and processing of samples (bacterial cultures, digesta, urine, fecal material, ambient gases).
• Complete in vitro and in situ nutrient degradation experiments
• Complete an animal trial which will include determination of dry matter intakes, rumen pH, collecting rumen samples, determining volatile fatty acids, nitrogen, and count protozoa
• Data entry and initial analysis
• Record maintenance.

Work environment

The Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (LRDC) is one of the largest within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network of research centres. The Centre has 54 research scientists and is located in southern Alberta. The Centre's research is focused in the areas of environmental health, bioproducts and bioprocesses, food safety and nutrition, and sustainable production systems. LRDC has excellent facilities for dairy, sheep and beef cattle, including a research feedlot and carries on significant research in new and improved technologies for beef cattle production and beef quality.

Looking for a Master of Science student who is enrolled Veterinary Medical Sciences at University of Calgary as Dr. Tim McAllister has a joint research project at this institution.

Currently enrolled/or willing to enroll in a Master’s program at the University of Calgary with specialization in: Veterinary Medical Sciences.

Degree equivalency

Experience* complying with provincial and institutional health, safety, and environmental standards to ensure the well-being of self, others, resources and work sites (ex. lab).

Experience* in the areas of animal physiology, animal welfare, breeding, environmental sustainability and the production of products like meat and eggs.

Experience* with Microsoft word and Microsoft Excel.

*In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.

Willingness to work in a laboratory with chemicals, and collect samples in abattoirs, barns, and under field conditions where climate varies.
Known allergies must be controlled either through the use of dust masks and/or medication and not impinge on tasks to be performed.
