Supervises, plans and directs the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
Supervises and manages engine room personnel, financial resources and materiel.
Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

This is an anticipatory process. The intent of this selection process is to create a pool of qualified candidates to be used to staff these or similar positions on a casual, acting, term and indeterminate basis within the Canadian Coast Guard across Canada.

Occupational Certification:
Stream 1: Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, 2nd Class Engineering Motor Ship
Stream 2: Valid Transport Canada STCW Certificate of Competency, 1st Class Engineering Motor Ship
Experience:
Stream 1: Experience as *Senior Engineer and/or Chief Engineer on a vessel with minimum 2000-3000 kW.
Stream 2: Experience as Chief Engineer on a vessel with minimum 3000+ kW.
*Senior Engineer is the Engineer next to the Chief Engineer in the line of authority. Sometimes referred to as 2nd Engineer.

• Experience as Senior Engineer on a Canadian Coast Guard Class F (1100 class) vessel or higher.
• Experience as Chief Engineer on a Canadian Coast Guard Class C (Hero Class) or higher.
Stream 2
• Experience as Chief Engineer on Canadian Coast Guard Vessels Class F (1100 class) or higher.
Both Streams
• Experience in managing a Preventative Maintenance System.
• Experience in planning, developing and implementing specifications for vessel modifications, emergency repairs or refit/drydockings.
• *Experience working in a shore position relating to Coast Guard Operations.
*CGOO 516 requirements to be fully met before hiring indeterminately into a Senior Officer at Sea position

• Willingness to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Coast Guard standards

• Adherence to Canadian Coast Guard Respiratory Protection Program
• Valid Canadian Passport (for identified positions)

The retest period for re-assessment within the context of this selection process is 6 months from the date of elimination at either the interview or reference stage of the process. If you submit an application to this selection process before the retest period has elapsed your application will not be considered. If you are eliminated at the screening stage, you are encouraged to resubmit your application once you meet the essential qualifications identified for screening.
Candidates must clearly identify which location(s) (Dartmouth, NS, St. John’s, NL or both) they are interested in. If appointed to a position, the location associated with the position will become the employee’s homeport and travel to and from the homeport will be the employee’s responsibility. A candidate may change the location he/she is applying for at any time.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The shore experience stated in CCG Fleet Order 516 applies to indeterminate appointments at the SO-MAO-09, 10, 11 and 12 levels only.

Salary for SO-MAO-08 - $42.74 - $47.39 per hour.
Salary for SO-MAO-09 - $46.01 - $51.02 per hour.
Salary for SO-MAO-10 - $50.16 - $55.60 per hour.
Salary for SO-MAO-11 - $55.23 - $61.24 per hour.
Salary for SO-MAO-12 - $60.20 - $66.75 per hour.
