Duties

This position will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance and inspections, as well as repairs on a variety of mechanical building systems. The Machinery Maintenance Works is responsible for documenting work activities, recording data and ordering parts and supplies. In addition, the incumbent is required to use a variety of diagnostic equipment. and to have an understanding of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) principles. The incumbent may also be required to act as liaison between AAFC and trades personnel.

Work environment

As one of the 20 research sites in Canada, the London Research Centre is located in London, Ontario. The London site is responsible for conducting various agricultural research studies for the Government of Canada. This position works in conjunction with a staff of 7 other employees to support the research by ensuring that the facilities and infrastructure are maintained in accordance with regulated maintenance and codes as well by meeting the requirements of the research programs at the London Research Centre.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff one (1) indeterminate full-time position for the location indicated for this process.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures.

Please note that this pool of qualified candidates may also be used to staff similar positions at this group and level in various locations within Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Successful completion of a secondary school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience performing preventative maintenance, diagnosis and repair/adjustments on complex mechanical equipment and building systems.

Experience completely dismantling and reassembling a variety of complex mechanical equipment and systems.

Experience in operating and maintaining various mechanical systems of a building including computerized building control systems

Experience in the operation and maintenance of power equipment and hand tools.

Experience using computer programs for word processing and e-mail.

Experience operating and maintaining a research greenhouse, scientific plant growth equipment and laboratory facilities.

Graduation from a post-secondary technical program in a field related to work

Certification and/or training in facility equipment or in scientific research equipment

Degree equivalency

Experience supervising staff and major capital projects

Knowledge of the operations, the operating principles and specifications of heating , air conditioning, ventilation and mechanical systems in a research environment.

Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures to ensure compliance, such as those relating to Canada Labour Code Part 2, National Building Code, Workers Compensation etc.

Knowledge of tools and diagnostic equipment as related to HVAC and building systems.

Knowledge of National Building Code, National Fire Code, Environmental Protection Act, Gas Utilization Codes Boiler Pressure Vessel Act, Canadian Electrical Code, Mechanical Refrigeration Code and Environmental Code of Practice for the Elimination of Fluorocarbon Emissions from Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems, April 2015.
