Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff three ENG-03 positions in Varennes, Québec, for a period of 2 years.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions ENG-03 positions at Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period (including sunset terms) or indeterminate), various language requirements (English or French Essential and Bilingual BBB/BBB), various security requirements and various conditions of employment.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or some other Engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Recent and significant experience* in the design, or operation, or analysis of industrial processes with an emphasis on the energy aspect or biorefining.
Experience in the preparation of scientific or technical documents such as reports, articles in scientific journals, monographs, and communications in national or international conferences.
Recent and significant experience* in at least two of the following areas:
a) The development of energy and mass balances of industrial processes.
b) The use of commercial process simulation software such as CADSIM Plus®, WinGEMS®, Aspen Plus®, Hysys®, etc.
c) The use of process integration techniques in industrial production processes such as pinch analysis and numerical optimisation techniques.
d) The development of calculation models for industrial energy systems, such as heat exchangers, utility and cogeneration systems, furnaces, boilers, etc.
e) The development of technology models for the capture and utilization of CO2 and its conversion into commodity and/or specialty products.
f) The development of biorefinery technology models, such as liquid hot water extraction, supercritical extraction, dilute acid hydrolysis, enzymatic hydrolysis, lignin recovery from Kraft black liquor, fast pyrolysis, gasification, conversion of sugars into high-value bio-based products, etc.
g) The techno-economic analysis of industrial processes.
h) The analysis of projects for energy efficiency, fossil fuel reduction, fuel substitution and greenhouse gases reduction in industrial facilities.
i) The analysis of projects for new technology integration into existing or new facilities (e.g. : biorefining technologies).
j) The analysis, modeling, computer simulation and optimization of the forest products supply chain as well as biorefinery products value chain.
k) Experiments in pretreatment and fractionation of biomass and their conversion into bio-based products, at laboratory or pilot scale.
l) The life cycle analysis of biorefinery processes and bio-based products.
m) The multivariate data analysis (data mining) applied to process operation optimization.
n) The analysis or optimization of industrial production lines or manufacturing supply chains based on artificial intelligence techniques such as statistical machine learning.

*Recent and significant experience is defined as at least 3 years of experience acquired in the last 5 years.

Master or Ph.D. from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience in mathematical modeling and optimization using software such as GAMS, AMPL, Mathematica, Matlab, etc.
Experience in multiobjective optimization of industrial processes or forest products supply chain.
Experience in data collection and analysis methods in industry.
Experience in process control and instrumentation, including fault detection and diagnosis.
Experience in the implementation of technology or energy efficiency project in industrial sites.

Knowledge of industrial processes involved in various sectors such as pulp and paper, petrochemical, chemical, food, metallurgical and others.
Knowledge in at least one of the following areas:
a) Design techniques and technologies for developing highly efficient industrial processes with low GHG emissions, including energy integration (pinch analysis or numerical optimisation), and/or industrial use of low carbon energy sources (biomass, renewable electricity), or CO2 capture and utilization and its conversion into commodity and/or specialty products.
b) Technological pathways and unit operations for the conversion of forest biomass or agricultural biomass into biochemicals, biomaterials, renewable fuels or bioenergy.
c) Multivariate data analysis (data mining) or artificial intelligence-based analysis applied to the development of process monitoring and control tools or for the analysis and optimization of manufacturing supply chains.
