Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this process is to staff 1 Indeterminate position with an English Essential profile. A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various conditions of employment, various language requirements (English essential and Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB) as well as various tenures (Indeterminate and term) across Health Canada. EDUCATION:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological science.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Experience* in at least one of the following areas:
• Assessment of risks to human health from chemicals.
• Conducting or evaluating mammalian toxicity studies.

* Experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of the duties for a period of approximately one year.

Information on language requirements

KNOWLEDGE:

• Knowledge of the Canadian Food and Drugs Act and Regulations as it applies to chemicals in food.
• Knowledge of chemical toxicology.
• Knowledge of standard protocols for toxicity testing of chemicals.
• Knowledge of procedures pertaining to the risk assessment of chemicals.

ABILITIES:

• Ability to critically evaluate toxicological data and provide recommendations related to the risk assessments of chemicals in food.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to plan, organize and respond to tight deadlines and shifting priorities.
• Ability to work under pressure.

EDUCATION:

Graduation with a MSc, PhD or advanced medical sciences degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

EXPERIENCE:

• Experience* conducting toxicological evaluations of chemicals for the purpose of assessing human health risks associated with an oral route of exposure.
• Experience* conducting risk assessment of chemicals in food, as well as recommending risk management options/strategies.

* Experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of the duties for a period of approximately one year.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Willingness and ability to work overtime
- Willingness and ability to travel
