Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECC) is a department that strives to offer a diverse, inclusive, innovative, and dynamic environment for its employees and we are currently seeking individuals who are interested in how mathematics and physical sciences are used in weather prediction, in addition to computer science.

We are amongst the most important prediction centres in the world, with more than 100 scientists and computer specialists working closely together to maintain and further develop Canada’s automated weather prediction systems. You could bring your computer expertise to researchers in the domain specialized in the conception and implementation of mathematical/physical algorithms, scientific programming, parallelization and optimization of code and, development of performance programming libraries and tools. Our super-computers are amongst the most powerful in Canada, with 62000 cores and reaching 1.8 petaflops.

With more than 20 different numerical prediction systems, we produce atmospheric, chemical (air quality), oceanic, hydrometric, and hydrodynamic forecast, which are used via our different data portals by our internal meteorologists, external users, other federal departments, and the public. Working in the meteorological research division, you will be working with researchers and meteorologists on the most forefront ideas to improve the numerical weather and environmental prediction models.

Intent of the process

INTENT OF THE PROCESS

The intent of this process is to create a pool of qualified candidates that will be used to fill CS-02 positions within Environment and climate change Canada in Dorval (Quebec), with an imperative bilingual language requirement (BBB/BBB), a reliability security clearance and various conditions of employments and tenures.

EDUCATION

ED1: Successful completion of an acceptable two-year post-secondary educational program in computer science, information technology, or another specialization relevant to the position; OR a graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in computer science or information technology; OR 5 years of an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience in computer science or information technology.

Definitions:
Degree: A baccalaureate or higher level degree, as established by educational authorities.
Recognized post-secondary institution: A public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs.

Notes:
1.Indeterminate period incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standards based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the CS group.
2.It is the recognized educational institution (e.g. community college, CÉGEP or university) that determines if the courses taken by a candidate correspond to having successfully completed a two-year post-secondary program at the institution.
3.At the manager's discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum post-secondary education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.
