Duties

Field work in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), Southern Ontario; Lab work and office work at the ECCC offices in Toronto, Ontario.

Field-based: Much of the field work will be led by research scientists of ECCC, commonly in partnership with academic partners. Work conditions will be variable depending on local circumstances.

Office-based: Assignments include data processing, analysis and interpretation as well as mapping and interface development.

In particular:
1. Collection and processing of data related to methane (and other greenhouse gas) emissions in the GTHA
2. Processing of output of ECCC’s numerical atmospheric transport model (GEM-MACH-TEB) and other frameworks that predict atmospheric concentrations
3. Analysis of continuous and field campaign data of atmospheric observations as well as data processing using gfit/GGG.

Work environment

Office (computer), laboratory and field work (spectrometers). The student is expected (1) to analyze data using various computer software and to develop methods for such analysis, (2) to optimize the existing ECCC methane emission map for the GTHA and (3) to compare numerical simulations with atmospheric observations.

ED1: Enrolled in a graduate degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) program at a recognized post secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
EX1: Experience analyzing socio-economic data to create spatialized emission maps for greenhouse gases at subnational scales.

EX2: Experience using (solar) Fourier Transform Spectrometers and associated data processing routines.

EX3: Experience working in a lab and in an office.

EX4: Experience performing research.
